Position

  • Part-Time Brothers and Sisters Youth Directors

Purpose

  • Connect the masjid youth to Allah (SWT) in the example of the Prophet Muhammad (S). The youth director will educate and empower the youth to create a vibrant, service-oriented masjid community.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge, training and teaching of Quranic and/ Islamic Studies with certification or letter of recommendation from a recognized scholar.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited North American college/University is recommended.
  • Degree in counseling, religious practice, chaplaincy, social work or equivalent preferable
  • Must understand the development needs and culture of IAGD community youth and be able to effectively respond to these needs through the youth programs.
  • Must have a minimum of two years experience of working with diverse Muslim youth in the U.S. or Canada. 
  • Must demonstrate highest character, moral integrity, and maturity necessary for building trust with youth and being a relatable role model
  • Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and excellent public speaking skills. 
  • Must be fluent in English.

Responsibility

  • Commitment to working with people from a range of diverse backgrounds, cultures, identities and lived experiences
  • Must follow personal and professional boundaries and demonstrate personal accountability
  • Must provide individual and group counseling; conduct intake and assessment of community members; provide different forms of counseling–whether spiritual, social or trauma-based; create and revise curricula for youth programming; should work to make immediate and broader community more inclusive, pluralistic and welcoming toward young people
  • Must be motivated to work on advocacy and community outreach; provide or connect community members with appropriate resources and services to meet their needs; network with different communities to build interfaith and intra-faith connections among youth; should be able to develop community awareness campaigns, events (social, educational, artistic), retreats, and workshops addressing issues related to young Muslims
  • Create and distribute outreach materials; lead and maintain social media efforts
  • Facilitate trainings for adults, parents, professionals and community groups about supporting Muslim youth
  • Should enthusiastically engage and empower youth; collaborate with other Muslim-centered or youth-serving providers to facilitate peer leadership activities that will engage young Muslims to grow spiritually and connect with their Creator, as well as be encouraged to organize, lead and train around matters relevant to their communities
  • Administratively report to the IAGD Board of Directors (BOD) and regularly communicate the strengths, needs and overall environment in regards to youth issues to the BOD.
  • Be able to handle administrative tasks such as preparing budgets, reports, and statistics, and maintaining documentation of all services. Make report to the BOD when requested.
  • Seek advice from the Imam of IAGD masjid for religious, educational and social programs developed for the youth
  • Lead regular educational programming for youth.

Salary

  • Salary commensurate with experience.

  • Sunday school youth
  • MYGD youth (Elementary School to College)
  • Youth who are masjid-going and want to become more practicing
  • Youth who have never been or rarely come to masjid
  • Youth with little to no Islamic foundation
  • Newly re/converted youth
  • Youth suffering from:
  • Substance abuse
  • Opposite gender relationships
  • Unstable school/home environments (eg domestic violence, cyberbullying, etc)
  • Youth who are questioning Islam (brink of atheism)
  • Youth who are LGBTQ
