Michigan requires a licensed funeral director to have custody of the deceased. Rahman Funeral Home is the local Muslim funeral director serving our area.

Once the funeral director has been contacted, it is important to have a cemetery plot ready. The nearest cemetery to IAGD with accommodations for Islamic burial is White Chapel Cemetery, 621 W. Long Lake Road, Troy MI. Ask for a plot in the Muslim section.

Announcing to the community — what to include, and a sample email
If the family wishes to have an email announcement of the funeral or Quran khattam/khwani, please email the Board of the Directors Secretary, Br. Fasahat Malik at Secretary@iagd.net. Please provide the name of the deceased and any additional information the family would like to share with the community such as date, time, and location of funeral and burial. Some other useful information to include: name of spouse, parents, and children. Optionally, the family may send a picture of the deceased, via email, if they would like it to be shared with the community.

More about funeral directors in Michigan
Michigan requires a licensed funeral director to have custody of the deceased. While any local funeral home can make the necessary arrangements, most of them are not familiar with Islamic burial requirements. Families using those facilities should be prepared to educate them along the way.

More about cemeteries and plots
Once the funeral director has been contacted, it is important to have a cemetery plot ready. If a plot was pre-purchased, inform the funeral director and contact the cemetery.
There are several Muslim cemeteries in southeast Michigan, but they are in closer proximity to other masajid. If the family is using those cemeteries, it is advisable to have the funeral service (janazah salat) at a masjid closest to the burial site.

When contacting the cemetery to purchase a plot, ask for a plot in the Muslim section. Plots and related fees must be paid for prior to burial. Note that burial times may be limited by White Chapel’s hours of operation and staffing.
